Identifying a Sheltie

Size:  13-16 in. measured to the shoulder
Weight:  14-27 lbs.
Body: 

Long, arched neck

Forelegs appear straight and muscular

Shoulder blade is at a 45 degree angle to the shoulder joints

Long tail

Mane: 

Full and thick

Males have a fuller mane than females

Head: 

Long head

Black nose

Well-rounded muzzle

Scissor bite

Dark, almond-shaped eyes

Ears: 

The tips of the ears are bent forward

Coat: 

Shelties have two coats which were used to protect them from the harsh, cold climate of the Sheltland Islands where they originated

Both coats are used for protection

Bottom coat shields from the cold or heat

Top coat is water resistant

Colors:

There are three common types of Shelties

-Sable

-Tri-Color

-Blue Merle
